STAGE RAIDER (Pioneerof the Nile x Stage Magic) broke sharply but settled off the pace as running got underway in the G3 Ack Ack S. at Churchill Downs, a win and you're in (WAYI) for the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. VINO ROSSO (Curlin x Mythical Bride) receives Eclipse Award for Older Dirt Male over division finalists Mitole and McKinzie. Vino Rosso won two G1s in 2019, namely the G1 Breeders Cup Classic and G1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita. If the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup had also shown as a win on Vino's resume (as opposed to first across the line but controversially DQ'd to 2nd), Vino would have won three G1s at three different tracks during 2019. VINO ROSSO (Curlin x Mythical Bride) was nominated as one of top three finalists for the Eclipse Award for Older Dirt Male alongside McKinzie and Mitole. Vino Rosso won two G1s in 2019, namely the G1 Breeders Cup Classic and G1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita. He was also first across the line in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup but was subject to a controversial DQ and moved down to 2nd place. Vino Rosso was the decisive winner of the Classic, beating MG1SW and fellow finalist McKinzie and exacting revenge on MG1SW Code of Honor who was the beneficiary of Vino's DQ in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Royal Ascot commenced just ten days after Justify became the 13th Triple Crown winner in history and it seemed improbable and unrealistic to hope for the dream to continue with Without Parole (Frankel x Without You Babe) in the G1 St James's Palace Stakes on Day 1 of Royal Ascot. With bated breath and hopes and dreams burning like embers that might just spark to full-fire again, we watched the race unfold in thrilling fashion. When Without Parole hit the front after Coolmore's pacesetter (one of three Coolmore runners in the race) folded more quickly than anticipated in the stretch, hearts pumped like wild, out-of-control elements of nature while hoarse voices shouted Without Parole home as he vied to retain leadership over Coolmore's closing hope, Gustav Klimt. JUSTIFY remains gloriously undefeated as he triumphs over rivals, track conditions and superstition to win the 144 Kentucky Derby!!!
Justify (Scat Daddy x Stage Magic) broke sharply under the urging of jockey Mike Smith and settled into position just off the leader in the soggy 144th running of the G1 Kentucky Derby. Vino Rosso (Curlin x Mythical Bride) broke fine, but with the outside post, some jostling and mud instantly in his face, had to settle for a wide position with only a couple of horses behind him as they headed into the first turn. With serious mud flying in his face and a wide trip throughout, Vino became a non-factor in the race, eventually making up some ground to finish 9th. Hopes for a Glennwood-bred success story in the Kentucky Derby fell on the massive shoulders of Justify.

When the time clock showed 22.24 (6th fastest 1st quarter in Derby history) and 45.77 for the first half mile, a collective sense of worry seemed to reverberate through the grandstands. Could the relatively inexperienced Justify overcome these fast factions amid the tremendously wet conditions, stay the course for the mile and a quarter total distance, and defy the Apollo curse (no horse having won the Derby without running as a 2yo since 1882)? ​Oh yes he could. With a quarter mile left to run, Justify took the lead and defied gutsy Good Magic, the sole horse to come for him down the stretch, to grasp Kentucky Derby glory by a resolute 2 1/2 lengths. Vino Rosso (Curlin x Mythical Bride) rated along the rail behind frontrunners in the early stages of the 8.5f G3 Sam F. Davis. With this being only his third career start, Vino Rosso took a moment to get into gear. Upon finding his best stride, Vino Rosso flew home but didn't have quite enough real estate to get up for the victory, beaten 1 1/4 lengths. Siberian Iris (Excelebration x Dawn to Dance) broke from the outside post 14 in her second career start going 9f over Santa Anita's turf course. Breaking well enough, jockey Alex Solis settled her in just to the outside near the back of the pack in the early going of this MSW event. Although racing greenly with her head slightly up, Siberian Iris showed willingness to get in the game as Solis gently asked her to pick it up as they neared the final furlongs. Siberian Iris took a bid to the outside of her front-running foes down the stretch and quickly took account of them. Following one sharp, educational crack of the whip, Siberian Iris kept focus and on to the wire to score a 2 1/2 lengths victory. Siberian Iris is believed to be the first winner for young Ireland-based stallion Excelebration (by Exceed and Excel). Excelebration is perhaps best known as the horse that finished second to champion racehorse Frankel on multiple occasions, often in Group 1 company. With the likes of 2015 G1 Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Runhappy,  Kentucky Derby 3rd Gunrunner and G1 / MGSW Dortmund among others in the mix for the highly competitive renewal of the G1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, TAMARKUZ (Speightstown x Without You Babe)  was not the most talked about contender with odds of 12/1 as the gates opened. Under the expert guidance of "Big Money Mike" Smith, Tamarkuz relaxed early in his first attempt at a two-turn dirt mile. When Smith asked for more, Tamarkuz obliged with a burst of speed that blew past rivals and secured victory by a convincing 3 1/2 lengths. A winner in his first start as a 2YO, King Cole (Scat Daddy x Volver) returned to the races on the AWT in England for his 3YO debut. Breaking slowly from the gate, King Cole had to settle behind horses early and then was sent to the far outside to make his leadership bid. With a solid late kick, King Cole got within a short neck of victory at the wire, finishing 2nd while galloping out in front with great vigor. The Medaglia d'Oro colt Stradivari (out of Bending Strings) was relaxed as ever in the paddock and on post parade but was sharply away from the gate in his return from a 4+ months layoff in this 9f Allowance at Keeneland. The G3 Messidor field lacked an obvious pace-setter and so Bookrunner found himself on the lead from the outset of the 1600m event at Maisons-Laffitte. The race was run on the straight and as the field neared the point where the serious running would commence, Bookrunner and Badel allowed foes to make the initial push for the lead rather than make an early move which would land them in a precarious position for being pounced on at the wire. However, as the quickening commenced, Bookrunner took a moment to find his best stride and got up for a closing third at the finish. With a cutback in distance, the long-striding Havana Moon was able to relax near the rear of the field as the initial pace of the race took on a more serious note than in her previous races. Seventh of nine in the initial stages, Havana Moon was then asked to make her way into contention as the race progressed toward the finish. Achieving the lead, Havana Moon looked set to break her maiden status until a fast-finishing Olanthia swooped in to take the Prix de la Bibliotheque National by 1 3/4 lengths. Tiger Moth (Street Sense x Saratoga Cat) showed run in her career debut at Gulfstream in May in which she finished a closing 3rd. In this 1 1/16th miles MSW at Belmont, Tiger Moth gave up ground early when she hopped out of the ground but quickly erased that lead under jockey Johnny V's guidance. Turning for home, Tiger Moth wore down foes to take the lead and didn't let up down the stretch, winning by 3/4 of a length. Tiger Moth is a half-sister to MGSW LAST GUNFIGHTER. Western Brook third on debut at Keeneland
Western Brook (Desert Party x Deli Lama) broke sharply from the gate in her career debut going 6f over Keeneland’s dirt course. Tucked neatly on the rail, Western Brook soon found she had no running room and was forced to sit and wait behind horses until the stretch. When a hole didn’t open up on the rail, the jockey was forced to wheel her out to find an opening but lost some momentum in the process. Although the top two horses had extended their advantage, Western Brook showed gameness by digging in to pass the eventual fourth place finisher. Signal Hill (Eye of the Tiger x Northern Sorceress) stalked the pace early in the maiden $50k claimer going 1 mile over the Churchill Downs dirt course. Majestico wins MSW in impressive fashion at Keeneland
Breaking awkwardly out of the gates, Majestico (Majesticperfection x Senorita Dehere) was slammed and pinched backward at the start of the 9f MSW over Keeneland's turf course. As the field spread out, Majestico had 11 lengths to make up and had to wheel to the outside down the stretch and drive to the wire to get up for the victory.  Although pre-entered for the Breeders Cup 2014 Juvenile Turf, Majestico remained on the also eligibles list with no real chance of drawing in. Strum (Medaglia d'Oro x Bending Strings) was expecting to make her turf debut at Belmont but had to settle for off the turf slop. Making matters even more challenging, Strum broke slowly from the gate and spotted the field a number of lengths from the outset. Fila Primera (War Front x Southern Strike) settled into mid pack in her stakes debut at Keeneland in the 1 1/16m turf G3 Jessamine S.  The 2YO War Front filly made a bid turning for home but flattened out slightly in the stretch to finish 3rd. The placing achieved graded stake credentials for herself and her dam as a producer. Enchantress (Malibu Moon x In the Ghetto) broke sharply from the gate, raced along gamely on or near the front end then put her competitors to bed as she opened up in the stretch to win by a going away 6 3/4 lengths in her MSW debut at Keeneland. Fila Primera (War Front x Southern Strike) broke nicely and settled just in behind horses in her debut at Belmont going 1m on the turf against maiden special weight foes.  Slow fractions made her closing run along the rail more challenging but running the last quarter in 22 and change, Fila Primera found the wire in front. Goodtimehadbyall (Quiet American x Miss Brickyard) made his 53rd career start at Monmouth going 1m 70y. Although bobbling at the break, Goodtimehadbyall  was able to recover and win the $50,000 claiming drop down in class race by 1 1/2 lengths going away. The 6yo gelding now has 10 career victories to his name including a stakes win and earnings of over $425,000. Lafontaine (Artie Schiller x Deli Cat) settled on the rail in behind the hot favorite during the early part of the 9f  turf race.  As they turned for home, a hole opened up for Lafontaine. Although lugging in slightly at this stage, as soon as Lafontaine changed leads he inhaled the favorite and took the Toronto Cup Stakes in style at Woodbine. Bookrunner returns a winner in 1600 meter Prix Herbager at Maisons-Laffitte 
After a brief lay-off, Bookrunner (Tiznow x Take the Ribbon) braved very soft conditions to get back on track. Breaking nicely with the pack, Bookrunner sat in behind the frontrunners to the outside of a slightly too keen racemate. When jockey CP Lemaire angled him out for the run, Bookrunner was more than happy to oblige taking the Prix Herbager conditions race by a length. Although breaking cleanly, Liatris (Warrior's Reward x Miss Brickyard) raced awkwardly perhaps greenly in the early stages of the 5 1/2f Astoria S. at Belmont. As the 2YO filly found her best stride, she began to overtake rivals continuing down the stretch to grab 2nd in her stakes debut which was also her second career start. The winner became a new TDN rising star while Liatris demonstrated she may benefit from more ground in future races. The filly broke well but with an outside post was then forced to travel four-wide for the majority of the race. Although not able to catch the winner, Momentary Magic ran on well for second. Last Gunfighter kept his back to the sun and shot straight and true in his 2014 seasonal debut
Last Gunfighter (First Samurai x Saratoga Cat) raced in mid-pack early in the 1 1/8m Mountainview H. at Penn National. Approaching the turn for home, Last Gunfighter with Javier Castellano as pilot made a big move 4-wide to position himself alongside the frontrunners. Gutting it out down the lane, Last Gunfighter prevailed, putting his nose in front right at the wire. The thrilling finish was accompanied by a lengthy inquiry but ultimately no change was made and the victory was posted for Last Gunfighter. Liatris (Warrior's Reward x Miss Brickyard) broke well and raced along in third at the outset of this 5f MSW debut at Pimlico. Although the leader was well-clear heading to the wire, Liatris running greenly down the stretch collared this foe and won drawing away by 3 3/4 lengths. Venetian Mask (Pulpit x Molto Vita) trailed the field early in the 7f MSW event at Parx but did not hold this position for long. My Miss Sophia (Unbridled's Song x Wildwood Flower) rated just off the pace at the outset of the run for the Kentucky Oaks lilies. Gaining the lead about 3f from the wire, My Miss Sophia held this position briefly but was unable to keep pace with the heavy favorite Untapable. Sophia continued on well to prove herself a clear second best with 6 lengths separating her from the rest of the field and 4 1/2 lengths to the winner. My Miss Sophia (Unbridled's Song x Wildwood Flower) was the heavy favorite in the 1 1/8 miles G2 Gazelle S. at Aqueduct. The filly justified those odds with an emphatic romp - scoring a 7 1/4 length victory over her foes and earning herself 100 points on the road to the Kentucky Oaks. Bookrunner makes an exciting seasonal debut in G3 Prix Djebel 
In only his second lifetime start, Bookrunner (by Tiznow x Take the Ribbon) came up against a salty group of stakes credentialed horses in the 7fT G3 Prix Djebel - a prep for the English and French classics. Racing just in behind the leaders in the early stages, Bookrunner soon found himself in tight quarters and was bounced sideways in the final stages of the race. Seizing the moment arguably a touch early as a result, Bookrunner vied for the lead and battled head and head down to the wire. The race culminated in a blanket finish of four horses, with Bookrunner 4th by two short heads in this strong edition of the G3 Prix Djebel. Last Gunfighter becomes Millionaire with victory in G2 Hawthorne Gold Cup 
Last Gunfighter (First Samurai x Saratoga Cat) ended 2013 with perhaps one of his strongest performances of the year, winning the 1 1/4 miles G2 Hawthorne Gold Cup with an enthusiastic effort that also achieved Millionaire status for himself. Content to settle in striking distance behind the frontrunners at the early stages, Last Gunfighter was taken out four-wide when it came time to make a bid for the lead. Quickly reeling in his competitors, Last Gunfighter won drawing away while providing jockey Joe Bravo with the arduous task of pulling him up after the wire. The victory was made more impressive by the fact that it came after a solid effort to achieve 5th in the G1 Breeder's Cup Classic earlier in the month.  Last Gunfighter was foaled, raised and started at Glennwood and is raced by John Gunther

Making his first racecourse appearance, Bookrunner (Tiznow x Take the Ribbon) raced toward the back of the group for the first part of the 1 mile and 1 1/2 furlongs event over Chantilly's synthetic course. Lacking running room through the early stages, Bookrunner was swung out wide on the turn for home and quickly made up ground to take the lead, drawing away to win by 4 lengths.
