G1 St. James's Palace Stakes @ Royal Ascot ♔ (replay)

Trained by John Gosden and ridden by Frankie Dettori, WITHOUT PAROLE entered the St. James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot as an undefeated stakes winner. Although he was relatively inexperienced and had not yet run at Group level, Without Parole was established as the 9/4 favorite for the race. Drawn in post 2 with saddle cloth 9, Without Parole faced two Group 1 Classic winners, two Group 1 Classic-placed stakes winners, two other Group level winners and a tidy handful of others vying to make their mark at the top level of the sport. As the running got underway, one of three Ballydoyle runners managed to get loose on the lead. Frankie was faced with the decision to either move earlier than he wanted to or wait for the ideal time to make his run, which might allow the frontrunner to gain an advantage too great. Knowing the danger inherent in a front-running G1 winner from the Ballydoyle camp, Frankie made the decision to move forward early with the knowledge that this might set things up perfectly for a late run by one of the other contenders, particularly another Ballydoyle runner. Approaching the 2f mark, Frankie moved Without Parole up to 2nd position. Having committed to the forward move, the race to the finish was now well and truly on. At 1f out, Without Parole struck the front as the early leader capitulated. Now, as feared, came Ballydoyle's Gustav Klimt with a gutsy run. Gustav drew nearer and nearer but Without Parole dug in and ran on bravely. Without Parole crossed the wire in front by a 1/2 length, winning the G1 St. James's Palace Stakes in glorious fashion. He had done it!!!

The Road to Royal Ascot

Although it would be natural to presuppose that the story of Without Parole started when he was born in 2015, from a breeder's perspective the story of this colt really began back in 2003 with the purchase of his grand-dam Marozia (by Storm Bird).  John Gunther spotted something he loved in this mare's pedigree and his purchase of this broodmare was the first of many decisions that led to the creation of Without Parole.

Dialing the timeline forward ten years to 2013, another pivotal decision was made: the decision to send Without You Babe to England with the hope of breeding her to Frankel. At that time, Without You Babe was an unraced and unproven mare by Lemon Drop Kid out of Marozia. Marozia had proven herself by then, having produced G1SW Stay Thirsty among others, but Without You Babe still had everything to prove. Her son Tamarkuz had won a nice conditions race and appeared promising but his first graded stakes victories would come only months before Without Parole was born.

Without Parole was born in March 2015 at Newsells Park Stud in England. Coincidentally, a week or so later a horse that would make the history books was born at Glennwood on the same day that Tamarkuz would put himself on the global radar with victory in the G2 Godolphin Mile on Dubai World Cup day. This colt, born only days apart from Without Parole, became known as Justify, the 13th Triple Crown winner. The stories of these two colts became forever intertwined in our minds, even before the events of 2018 unfolded.

In 2016, Without Parole was entered in Book 1 of Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. Following on the heels of Keeneland September, the venue at which we had sold Justify, the RNA of Without Parole was nearly predictable. Without Parole was happily brought home and shortly thereafter went into training with John Gosden.

Without Parole broke his maiden impressively late in his two year old year in 2017. He was then 'put away' for the winter and came back a winner on seasonal debut as a three year old in 2018. Without Parole then targeted the Heron Stakes at Sandown after bypassing the 2000 Guineas due to a minor setback. Although he wasn't perfectly fit and ready for the Sandown race, Without Parole needed to run if he wanted a chance to prove his talent on the big stage at Royal Ascot. Without Parole duly delivered in the Heron Stakes and cast his eyes toward Ascot.

On June 9, 2018, precisely ten days before Without Parole's race at Royal Ascot, we were on hand at Belmont Park in New York to witness Justify capture Triple Crown glory by winning the G1 Belmont Stakes. With the feeling of incredulity at this huge feat still pervading our thoughts, we set off for Royal Ascot with guarded anticipation. Surely this dream could not also come true? Not so soon after becoming the breeder of a Triple Crown winner?! Impossible. Or was it?

Needless to say, we were in awed shock when Without Parole acquired the lead in the long stretch to the winning post at Ascot. Suddenly, the reality that Without Parole might just do it entered our minds and our cheering him onward sustained a massive injection of hope that the impossible might just be possible. In that moment, when Without Parole defied Gustav Klimt to win the G1 St. James's Palace Stakes, he made the most incredible dream come true. It is hard to find words that can accurately describe how we felt on this day, but pure joy, pride and disbelief are emotions that defined the moment.  [TOP]
